"The Crucible" is an exciting drama about the Puritan purge of witchcraft in Old Salem. It is a combination of historical play and timely parable about certain immediate parallel issues in our contemporary society - the "irresponsible pressures" according to Kerr (Herald Tribune) "which are being brought to bear on free men...with the evasions and dishonesties into which cowardly men are daily slipping." Quoted from "The Commonweal," a Roman Catholic magazine..."Mr. Miller's characteristic theme is integrity, and its obverse compromise. In "The Crucible" however, he has stated his theme again with a wholly admirable concision and force. From "Commentary" which is published by the American Jewish Committee..."It is a drama of universal significance."
